The Local Area

Melmerby Village, traditionally built around the village green, offers all necessary amenities only minutes away from the park. The village green offers a safe haven for children to play ball games or explore the natural wild life. The village is the ideal location from which to explore the Lake District, Cumbria, the Eden Valley and Hadrian’s Wall.

The Eden Valley, noted as an area of outstanding beauty, offers endless tourist attractions for all ages. For those wishing to enjoy an active day; walking in the area is suitable for both novice and experienced fell walkers. There are large indoor swimming pools located at the leisure centres in both Penrith and Appleby, along with numerous outdoor pools located in HunsonbyLazonby and Askham, for those feeling a little braver. Public tennis courts are available in both Langwathby and Penrith. Keswick Climbing Wall offers a wide range of outdoor activities from biking to ghyll scrambling, canoeing to raft building, and of course climbing and abseiling.

For the less energetically minded why not visit some of the areas famous houses, gardens and nurseries. Hutton-in-the-Forest is a beautiful historic house on the North Eastern edge of the Lake District. It is surrounded by the magnificent woodland of the medieval forest of Inglewood. Situated in the picturesque splendour of the Lakeland fells, Dalemain Historic House and Gardens also allows you to discover and enjoy both a historic mansion and celebrated gardens. Acorn Bank Garden in Temple Sowerby is a National Trust Garden best known for its comprehensive herb collection and traditional fruit orchards. Larch Cottage Nurseries, Melkinthorpe, is a specialist nursery that grows a range of rare and unusual plants. Hazel Dene Garden Centre in Culgaith offers an extensive range of plants in its nursery, alongside a gift and fine food shop.

The local area also has a number of museums, galleries and heritage centres offering family friendly facilities and activities suitable for all ages. Rheged Visitors Centre near Penrith offers giant movies, exhibitions and an abundance of shop for all tastes. The Lake District Wildlife Park, near Bassenthwaite, is home to hundreds of animals from around the world, with displays and talks taking place several times each day. Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle, plays host to a wide range of exhibitions and events which change several times throughout the year. Upfront Gallery in Skelton is home to Upfront Puppet Theatre and the workshop of artist, John Parkinson. Beckstones Art Gallery is a fine art gallery located in Greystoke which specialises in exhibiting high quality original paintings from contemporary artists throughout the UK.

To further explore the local area, there are a number of transport options which are both fun and practical. The Settle-Carlisle Railway is England’s most scenic railway and on-train guides are available to accompany groups travelling on the line. They also offer guided walks. The Mountain Goat Company offer an exciting and inspiring choice of guided sightseeing mini coach tours through the wilder parts of the Lake District. To explore the lakes, there are tourist boats that sail on many of the lakes. The Keswick Launch offers lake district cruises around Derwent Water. Ullswater Steamers offer one of the best ways to enjoy England’s most beautiful lake. You can also cruise in grand style on Lake Coniston on a steam powered yacht gondola.

There are a number of places to eat out in the local area, ranging from village pubs and restaurants to coffee shops and tea rooms. Notable nearby places to eat out include; the Shepherds Inn, Melmerby, The Fox Inn, Ousby, The Black Swan, Culgaith, Kyloes Restaurant, Great Salkeld and Mrs Miller’s Restaurant, Culgaith. If you prefer however to source your own food there are also a number of specialist food shops in the area. The Village Bakery in Melmerby showcases high quality ingredients from local and organic suppliers in both its bakery and restaurant. Greystone House Farm Shop and Tearoom, Stainton, sells an extensive range of Cumbrian produce including meats, dairy products, fruits and vegetables and freshly baked breads and cakes. At Little Salkeld Watermill you can find a fully operational watermill that produces and sells stoneground organic flours and a wide range of organic foods.
